ALIEN CAPITAL
Bangkok Art Bienale 2018
Statement
Sornchai Phongsa grew up in migrant workers society in an industrial factory. Whilst growing up he noticed the difference of the quality of life of immigrant workers compared with that of people with legal Thai status at the same age. He aims to reflect the struggle of migrant workers through this concept.
Alien Capital is a mixed media creation, as the artist works with migrant workers to deal with the theme and issues of rights and equalities, whilst also addressing ethnic matters. He created the huge bamboo construction cover a shipping container in the center of the capital city to represent Bangkok city as an experimental area for the possibility of bargaining between art and the society of immigrant workers. According to Bangkok city, the province allows a maximum of 243,982 people, immigrant workers, to work within the region.
Sornchai uses the form of human identification methods to present the social identity of four migrant workers employed to workin the region. He achieves this with the use of fingerprints, numbers, interview videos, employment documents, and the ghost symbol (a Turtle ), to symbolize their existence in a society that fails to recognize them as being.
